Roopanands

Roopanand Bros (PTY)Ltd. commenced business in 1932 by two brothers Mr. Dhonday Roopanand and Mr Sewbarun Roopanand. The business had very humble beginnings with barely any capital but the brothers had determination and worked very hard to make the business a success.
All their merchandize was from India such as Vernacular books (Hindi, Tamil, Urdu and Guajarati), Musical Instruments and Gramophor Records. In those days there was no planes and the brothers had to go regularly to India by sea to source their requirements. In January 1956 Mr. Dhonday Roopanand passed away due to heart complications and his share was bought by Mr. Sewbarun Roopanand. Arvind Roopanand, the eldest son of Mr. Sewbarun showed keen interest in the business from a very young age.

After school and even whilst studying in university he should go to his father’s shop and assist in purchasing, sales etc. After graduating from university in 1966 he joined the business on a full time basis and under his guidance there was a massive expansion in the business.

Mr. Sewbarun Roopanand- Arvinds father expired in 1981 and under Mr. Arvind Roopanands guidance the business continued expanding with many new items being introduced such as Indian Garments, Pooja (Prayer) Items, Brassware, Imitation Jewellery, Weddind Cards, CD's and DVD's, Murthi's etc.

Roopanands is a household name for anything you want from India. We are one of the oldest Indian private owned businesses in the country with a flagship store in Springfield Park, Durban. Our survival is due to the fact that we provide quality merchandise to our customer’s at very reasonable prices – sometimes cheaper than what you would pay in India – and we live and breath the slogan - We Bring India to You.
